Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Superheroes

Now that we're finally past the bulk of superhero events there's almost too many new projects to keep track of suddenly! But we will always, and I mean always, prioritize the giant horse-faced alien bff of Thor.

You'll see that I'll try to include a little order code with most items (ex:JUL200019). Show some love to your retailer and use those codes when you can, it saves a lot of time on the data entry end of things.

Rated T+

Why this caught my eye:

Daniel Warren Johnson is hands down one of the most exciting creators of the past few years with his work on Extremity, Murder Falcon, and Wonder Woman: Dead Earth. This feels like a dream project and it sounds like he's extremely excited to do it, so it should just be a ton of fun. Also, seriously, it's Beta Ray and Fing Fang Foom. Ten year old me is freaking out.

SUPERMAN RED & BLUE #1

written by JOHN RIDLEY, WES CRAIG, BRANDON EASTON, DAN WATTERS, and MARGUERITE BENNETT

art by CLAYTON HENRY, WES CRAIG, STEVE LIEBER, DANI, and JILL THOMPSON

cover by GARY FRANK

variant cover by LEE BERMEJO

variant cover by YOSHITAKA AMANO

$5.99 US | 40 PAGES | 1 OF 6 | FC | DC

This new series presents fresh new visions of the Man of Steel in his two signature colors of red and blue! Around the world, everyone knows that when they see a red and blue streak in the sky, it's not a bird...it's not a plane...it's Superman.

To start things off, Academy Award-winning writer of DC Future State: The Next Batman John Ridley joins artist Clayton Henry (Batman/Superman) to tell a story of Clark Kent as he confronts a villain who still haunts him, in a story that shows what Superman can mean to a whole country.

Then, Brandon Easton (DC Future State's "Mister Miracle") and Steve Lieber (Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen) take readers to the streets of Metropolis to show how one hero can mean so much to an individual in pain.

Plus, writer/artist Wes Craig (Deadly Class) tells a tale of Superman's early days and the man who inspired him to become the hero he is today!

And Marguerite Bennett (DC Future State: Kara Zor-El, Superwoman) and artist Jill Thompson give us a tale of teenage Clark Kent, while Dan Watters and Dani, the team behind Coffin Bound, bring us an outlandish fable about what happens when all colors are stolen!

Why this caught my eye:

I'm always down to try a color themed anthology series, and as I'm a Wes Craig fan I'm eager to see what he's got in store for his story.

CARNAGE BLACK WHITE AND BLOOD #1

(W) Donny Cates, Ben Percy, Tini Howard (A) Ken Lashley (A/CA) Sara Pichelli

CARNAGE RULES!

Witness the cerebral chaos caused by CARNAGE, brought to life by some of the greatest creators at Marvel! But beware, True Believers, true to their titular character's namesake, these spine-chilling tales are not for the faint of heart and presented in BLACK, WHITE AND BLOOD!

JAN210599

Why this caught my eye:

I guess I just said that I'm down for color based anthologies, didn't I? While Carnage is a bit less interesting to me than Superman, he can be visually striking and this series opens the door for artists to have some fun.

NIGHTWING #78

written by TOM TAYLOR

art and cover by BRUNO REDONDO

variant cover by SKAN

$3.99 US | 32 PAGES | FC | DC

Nightwing is back—and his drive to keep Blüdhaven safe has never been stronger! But his adopted city has elected a new mayor with the last name Zucco. When Nightwing enlists Batgirl's help in investigating the politician bearing the same name as the man who murdered his parents, she unearths details that will shock and fundamentally change the hero.

The New York Times bestselling team of writer Tom Taylor (DCeased, Injustice) and artist Bruno Redondo (Injustice, Suicide Squad) are about to take Nightwing to the next stage of his evolution as a hero!

Why this caught my eye:

Nightwing's been kind of stuck in a rut as a character for a bit, so this sounds like a return to basics. The trick is that Tom Taylor is a really fun writer with a really good sense of his characters, so there's every chance this will be one of the best bat-family runs we've had in a while.

Why this caught my eye:

The Greg Smallwood cover is honestly what caught my eye, but I'm liking the look of Kambadais' clean art style as well. The plot summary also sounds like it has a nice pulp feel to it, so the package just sounds fun overall.

That's it for this batch, we'll hit horror up next time!
