Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Sci-Fi

We're inching ever closer to the time when The Mouse will control all franchises and IP in the world, and we're going to get a little taster here to see how they handle their sci-fi horror. Listen, if we end up with Alien VS Predator but by Pixar it won't be any worse than the actual movies. In fact......now I really wanna see that....

You'll see that I'll try to include a little order code with most items (ex:JUL200019). Show some love to your retailer and use those codes when you can, it saves a lot of time on the data entry end of things.

ALIEN #1

(W) Phillip Kennedy Johnson (A) Salvador Larroca (CA) Inhyuk Lee

THE ICONIC CINEMATIC TERROR MAKES ITS MARVEL DEBUT!

Gabriel Cruz gave his life to Weyland-Yutani--In the case of an alien attack he barely survived, almost literally! Recently retired, Cruz is trying to patch things up with his abandoned son with the help of his friend, a Bishop-model android, but his re-entry into civilian life is not going smoothly...and his encounters with the deadly Xenomorph are far from over.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Salvador Larroca team up to tell an all-new tale of the titan of horror and science fiction that has scared audiences for decades. No one is safe. No one is innocent. And no one can hear you scream.

Why this caught my eye:

It will be interesting to see what Marvel does with the franchise, besides print millions of variant covers. I've only read a handful of Johnson's works and I did enjoy them, but I'm not the biggest Larrocca fan. I'll assume Marvel will probably follow in Dark Horse's footsteps and just do short mini-runs with alternating talent, so there's some really interesting possibilities for down the road.

FIREFLY BRAND NEW VERSE #1

(W) Josh Lee Gordon (A) Fabiana Mascolo (CA) Qistina Khalidah

Set 20 years after the events of Firefly, Serenity soars the 'Verse once again with a new captain - Emma, the daughter of Wash and Zo!

The old crew of Serenity has gone their own way and now Emma is working to prove herself to Zo , alongside a new crew of castaways and misfits just trying to stay afloat.

But when Serenity takes a job from a familiar face, they discover that their new, living, breathing cargo is far more than they bargained for...and might bring them into conflict with the Alliance once again!

Josh Lee Gordon (Firefly: Bad Company) and Fabiana Mascolo (Yasmeen) begin a new era for Joss Whedon's Firefly with First Appearances of an all new cast, new adventures and shocking new surprises!

Why this caught my eye:

Obligatory share for all the Firefly fans, but I am interested in the choice for them to move down the timeline with a new cast of characters. I think it's a great idea for new stories and fresh content, but curious how the fanbase will react as the franchise is so heavily dependent on the original cast.

PREDATOR ORIG YRS OMNIBUS HC VOL 01 WARNER DM VAR

(W) Mark Verheiden, More (A) More (A/CA) Chris Warner

The hunt begins! As the Predators make their Marvel debut, experience their original comics legacy! Nowhere is safe when the remorseless alien killers stalk the concrete jungle of New York City, leave a trail of death across the American Southwest and ignite the Cold War by landing in Siberia! And did Predators come to Earth during Vietnam and World War I? The hunters make a new enemy in Dutch's brother, Detective John Schaefer; and it's Predator vs. psychotic Predator in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey! And in 1950s Hollywood, only a child with special glasses can see the monster in the midst of Tinseltown! It's total carnage, Predator-style!

Collecting PREDATOR (1989) #1-4, PREDATOR 2 #1-2, PREDATOR: BIG GAME #1-4, PREDATOR: COLD WAR #1-4, PREDATOR: THE BLOODY SANDS OF TIME #1-2, PREDATOR: BAD BLOOD #1-4, PREDATOR: INVADERS FROM THE FOURTH DIMENSION, PREDATOR: DARK RIVER #1-4, PREDATOR: STRANGE ROUX and PREDATOR: KINDRED #1-4 - and material from DARK HORSE PRESENTS (1986) #46 and #119; DARK HORSE COMICS #1-2, #4-7, #10-14, #16-18 and #20-21; and A DECADE OF DARK HORSE #1.

Why this caught my eye:

I kinda love and I kinda hate this. On one hand it's nice to have these all in a chunky HC, and the Marvel omnibuses are well done if a little overpriced. On the other hand I was already getting the Dark Horse hardcovers and I just hate feuding formats across publishers.

SILVER AGE CLASSICS MYSTERIES OF UNEXPLORED WORLDS HC VOL 01

(A) Dick Giordano, Bill Molno, Charles Nicholas, Steve Ditko, Rocco Mastroserio

PS Artbooks presents another Silver Age Classic with this find straight from the Charlton vaults - Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds, which mixes a concoction of fantastic fantasy-supernatural tales and mind blowing science fiction stories from a roster of writers and artists that includes the truly remarkable and now late and lamented Steve Ditko together with Bill Molno, Dick Giordano, Charles Nicholas, and Rocco Mastroserio. All here, reproduced completely from cover to cover as they should be, just like the original comic!

Collects Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds #1-5 (August 1956 - October 1957).

Why this caught my eye:

Gotta spotlight for them rare Ditko reprints, and keep in mind PS books don't stay in print for too long.

IMPURE #1

(W) Ralf Singh (A) Hannes Radke (CA) Miki Montllo

The newest entry in the Scout NONSTOP! Imprint. Years after Nero and Minerva's homeworld, Castor, was destroyed by aliens, the siblings join the dreaded Earth Forces, to ensure something like this will never happen again. When Minerva betrays Nero, and all they ever believed in, it is up to Nero to stop his sister before she reaches the alien alliance. For what Minerva has stolen may well turn the tides of war and spell humanity's downfall.

Enjoy the World Premiere issue followed by the entire story collected soon after in one volume.

Why this caught my eye:

I'm liking the look of Radke's artwork a lot so I'm curious to check it out mostly for the artwork, but the plot sounds like it could be fun as well. It also looks like this is another one of those single issue previews before they immediately release it in trade kinda deals, so I'm always curious to see how that model works for publishers.

Here's a nice sample of Radke's art:

That's it for this batch, next one will be a kaiju special focus!
