Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Kaiju

On this very kaiju episode of spotlights we've got a dysfunctional kaiju fighting family, Salvador Sanz's Mega title finally seeing print in the US, a double dose of Godzilla goodness, and a kaiju corpse cleaner turned kaiju himself in a new manga series.

(W) Tres Dean (A/CA) Sebastian Piriz

Kaiju hit hard. Family hits harder.

Trying to keep your family from imploding is a tall order. Kit Hobbs is about to find out it's an even taller order when that family has been piloting the Titan that protects New Hyperion from kaiju for generations. Between a spiraling brother, a powder keg of a father, and a whole bunch of twenty-story monsters, she's got her work cut out for her.

Why this caught my eye:

Early previews looked fun, and I'm generally interested in seeing what projects Vault has coming out.

(W) Salvador Sanz (A/CA) Salvador Sanz

A gigantic creature has been awaken from its eternal sleep in Antarctica. The destructive monster, only known as "The Salamander," has started a journey of chaos and destruction. The only thing that could stop this menace is another sleeping giant; a creature from under the ocean known as "Mega."

Why this caught my eye:

I already reviewed this a while back, but hey now you can finally get it in print.

(W) Adam Gorham (A) Adam Gorham (CA) E. J. Su

When Mars invades Earth, Godzilla surfaces from Tokyo Bay and is pulled into battle. Captured and taken by the Martians, Godzilla is forced to fight in a gladiatorial arena, where he faces his biggest challenge yet-King Ghidorah!

Why this caught my eye:

I'm not to familiar with Gorham but he's been sneaking preview shots of this on his Instagram and it looks like fun.

(W) Erik Burnham (A/CA) Dan Schoening

When Godzilla becomes humanity's judge, life on Earth will hang in the balance in this middle-grade graphic novel adventure! When a coldly single-minded businessman uses an untested element to create clean energy for a profit, he inadvertently awakens the beast from the deep-Godzilla! Sensing the harm the new energy poses to the planet, Godzilla attacks the heart of the problem-humankind! It will be up to three intrepid middle-school students-with a little magic help from Infant Island-to show Godzilla that not all humans are bad... and that there is still hope for Planet Earth.

Why this caught my eye:

I appreciate the creative team's work on the IDW Ghostbusters stuff so I wanted to check this out once it was collected.

(W) Naoyo Matsumoto (A/CA) Naoyo Matsumoto

With the highest kaiju-emergence rates in the world, Japan is no stranger to attack by deadly monsters. Enter the Japan Defense Force, a military organization tasked with the neutralization of kaiju. Kafka Hibino, a kaiju corpse cleanup man, has always dreamed of joining the force and wants another shot at achieving his childhood dream of eliminating the kaiju. But how can he expect to fight kaiju when he suddenly becomes one himself?!

Why this caught my eye:

It sort of feels like a more kaiju leaning take on Attack On Titan maybe, but I like the corpse clean-up detail and the art I've seen online looks great.

That's it for this batch, we'll be taking a look at some bat-centric titles on the next installment.
