Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Kaiju!

We have been blessed with an outpouring of upcoming kaiju content, so I felt the need to make a special spotlight :)

You'll see that I'll try to include a little order code with most items (ex:JUL200019). Show some love to your retailer and use those codes when you can, it saves a lot of time on the data entry end of things.

ULTRAMEGA BY JAMES HARREN #1

(W) James Harren (A/CA) James Harren, Dave Stewart

A cosmic plague has spread, transforming everyday people into violent, monstrous kaiju. Only the Ultramega - three individuals imbued with incredible powers - hold the line against this madness. Their battles level cities and leave untold horror in their wake. Now, the final reckoning approaches for the Ultramega... but is this a war they can even win?

Fight monsters and stand with humanity in this new Skybound original from the greatest artist of his generation, JAMES HARREN (RUMBLE, BPRD) and Eisner Award-winning colorist DAVE STEWART. Each issue is extra-sized, with a 60-page debut that can barely contain its giant heroes, creatures, and devastation!

REGISTER PITCH: The high-impact adventure of EXTREMITY, but with the kaiju-esque monster action scenes of Pacfic Rim.

Why this caught my eye:

I'm a fan of Harren's work and really enjoyed Rumble. Toss in kaiju fighting action and I'm an easy mark for this title. Plus check out this nice preview art:

GODZILLA DOMINION GN

(W) Greg Keyes (A) Drew Johnson

A unique story that picks up after the events of the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, where the Titans have risen and the reign of Godzilla has begun. As told entirely from Godzilla's point of view, the graphic novel brings new insights into the King of Monsters: his habitats, ancient rivalries, challenges, and encounters with new Titans. As his new era of dominance is tested, a coming confrontation with another King looms.

Why this caught my eye:

With Godzilla VS Kong hitting soon it doesn't hurt to stock up on some background story material.

KINGDOM KONG GN

A sequel to the graphic novel Skull Island: Birth of Kong and a prelude to the film Godzilla vs. Kong, the upcoming Kong prequel graphic novel, will follow a group of highly skilled military pilots gathered together on Skull Island to see who has 'the right stuff' to take on a dangerous mission into the hollow earth. One of the pilots, Audrey, is haunted by the memories of a monstrous clash with one of Godzilla's titanic rivals that left deep scars. Why this caught my eye:

Legendary Comics ain't messing around, they want them supplementary franchise profits bad. I do have to give them credit for that title though.

When men become giant monsters destroying the world, only girls can stop them-BIG GIRLS. Meet Ember: she writes poetry, loves to read, she's 300 feet tall, and her full-time job is killing monsters! Her and the other girls are all that stand in the way of our world's complete annihilation! Why this caught my eye:

I just like Jason Howard a lot. and he just had a lot of fun with this series.

TRIALS OF ULTRAMAN #1

(W) Kyle Higgins, Mat Groom (A) Francesco Manna, Eduardo Ferigato, Gurihiru (CA) Art Adams

Ultraman narrowly averted a catastrophe decades in the making. The world was saved - but, also, forever changed. Now...come the consequences. Much of the populace regard their defenders with suspicion. Enemies hide in plain sight, and even those closest to Shin Hayata don't necessarily have faith in the Giant of Light. But at last, a long-thought-lost comrade has mysteriously returned! That's a good thing...right?

The RISE is over. The training wheels are off, and the stakes have never been higher. THE TRIALS OF ULTRAMAN begin here!

Rated T+

Why this caught my eye:

It's worth it just for that Art Adams cover. But also I appreciate that Marvel is handling this property with nice short mini-series.

KAIJUMAX TP VOL 05 SEASON 5

(W) Zander Cannon (A/CA) Zander Cannon

THE LONGEST RAMPAGE IS THE ORANGE MILE!

Deep in the bowels of the monster prison KAIJUMAX, death row inmates sit brooding on a lake of fire, awaiting execution. The giant crab Hermanculoid ("Hermie" to his friends), due to die in a matter of weeks, has a glimmer of hope as his lawyers mysteriously resurface with new evidence of police misconduct that goes all the way to the top. In the astral halls of justice, gang boss Pikadon and his flamboyant, amoral Team Legal -and their creepy animal sidekick -fight to sow doubt about the murder he definitely committed. And kindly, long-serving inmate Sharkmon wants to live out his sentence tending his pet sharks and goat, until love, in the form of the mysterious Sprinkles the Unidragon, comes to call. Also: devilish saviors! Self-interested "aliens"! Rhyming legalese! And... illegal child-fighting pits?

Why this caught my eye:

I stand by previous statements that Kaijumax is one of the best comics to be released this past decade. And not just within the genre of sci-fi and kaiju fiction because it goes way beyond sci-fi. This is one of the most emotionally impactful comics I've ever read, chockful of soul shattering character development, piercing political and social commentary, and some of the best comedy within comics today. It is literally a perfect series, and you should catch up to this volume ASAP.

That's it for this batch, we'll hit some fantasy next!
