Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Fantasy

This batch of upcoming fantasy spotlights features a dosage of Neil Gaiman charm, historical fantasy set in fifteenth-century West Africa, a Terry Gilliam-esque fantasy tale, Dark Souls action that doesn't require gamer frustration, and a new tale by Iron Circus Comics founder C. Spike Trotman and Eisner-nominated writer MK Reed!

(W) Neil Gaiman (A/CA) Colleen Doran

A delightfully humorous and sweet fantasy story brought to you by from the Eisner-award winning team of Snow, Glass, Apples: Neil Gaiman and Colleen Doran!

An elderly British widow buys what turns out to be the Holy Grail from a second-hand shop setting her off on an epic visit from an ancient knight who lures her with ancient relics in hope for winning the cup.

From the Hugo, Bram Stoker, Locus, World Fantasy, Nebula award-winning, and New York Times bestselling writer Neil Gaiman (American Gods) comes this graphic novel adaptation by Colleen Doran (Troll Bridge, Snow, Glass, Apples)!

Why this caught my eye:

That has to be one of the most charming story pitches I've ever read, plus I enjoy Gaiman and Doran's collaborations.

(W) Roye Okupe (A) Chima Kalu (CA) Godwin Akpan

Following the exploits of queen and military commander Malika, who struggles to keep the peace in her ever-expanding empire, Azzaz, this historical fantasy is set in fifteenth-century West Africa and created by an all-star team from Nigeria. In this action-packed graphic novel, African history mixes with drama, politics, betrayal, romance, and dragons!

Over 300 story pages!

A movement of African-inspired comics & storytelling!

Why this caught my eye:

This is another installment in the Dark Horse/YouNeek Studios collaboration and I'm interested in seeing them build more moment in getting more of their African-mythology inspired content into the mass market.

(W) Wilfrid Lupano (A/CA) Jean-Baptiste Andreae

This Crayon d'Or prize-winning graphic novel is an incredible Terry Gilliam-esque fantasy tale, penned by the award-winning author of the acclaimed Valerian spin-off.

Azimut features a host of quirky characters in a colourful fantasy world whose lives are turned upside down when the magnetic North pole simply disappears! MAY211764

Why this caught my eye:

I generally can do with more Terry Gilliam-esque comic material in my life, and what preview pages I could find online looked pretty interesting.

(W) George Mann (A) Alan Quah (CA) Joshua Cassara

Ten years after Dark Souls was first released on the PlayStation, comes the ultimate collection of the comic series inspired by one of the most influential games of the 21st century!

Collects Dark Souls: The Breath of Andolus, Dark Souls: Winter's Spite, Dark Souls: Legends of the Flame, Dark Souls: Tales of Ember and Dark Souls: The Age of Fire!

Why this caught my eye:

Hey, a version of Dark Souls that doesn't make me want to throw my controller out the window, that's nice. Also, $35 for this much content is a pretty solid deal.

(W) M. K. Reed, Spike, C. Trotman (A/CA) Clive Hawken

When the door to a living dungeon surfaces in the tiny hamlet of Oddgoat, village girl Temerity Aster has two choices: abandon the only home she's ever known to carpet baggers and sellswords, or carve out a place for herself and her family in the new and dangerous world of delving.

• From Iron Circus Comics founder C. Spike Trotman and Eisner-nominated writer MK Reed!

Why this caught my eye:

It's always worth checking out what projects Trotman is working on, and elements of this plot remind me a bit of Delicious In Dungeon so it sounds like fun.

That's it for this batch, we'll hit non-fiction on the next round!
