Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Fantasy

This batch features an emotional journey across the multiverse, a new reprint of G. Willow Wilson's hit Vertigo series Air, a new offering from Magnetic Press, high-stakes fantasy adventures set in the Philippines, and a new story in The Witcher universe based on the rich traditions of Japanese folklore.

(W) Wyatt Kennedy (A/CA) Luana Vecchio

It's Christmas in snowy Los Angeles, and Devyn "Dagger" Dagny is heartbroken. Her twelve-year relationship with her ex Natasha has just come to a tragic end, she's an aimless college dropout floundering at her job, and now her best friend is getting married to the wrong guy.

But what if she could start all over again?

A mysterious stranger. Something called an "anti-door" and a "mother-key." Only 53 chances.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind meets Locke and Key as writer WYATT KENNEDY and artist LUANA VECCHIO take you on an emotional journey across the multiverse.

Why this caught my eye:

Like that concept breakdown and I'm def there for Vecchio's art.

(W) G. Willow Wilson (A/CA) M. K. Perker

A new edition of the first of four thrilling volumes in this mind-bending, Eisner-nominated series! Acrophobic flight attendant Blythe has just fallen for a mysterious traveler-who may or may not be a terrorist-and she's about to embark on the strangest journey of her life. Searching for him, Blythe will crash-land into a web of technological conspiracies, dark politics and secret organizations. When she learns that she is the only person able to control flight and reality, with science so advanced it might be magic, she'll have to break the rules of time and space for answers.

By award-winning author G. Willow Wilson (Invisible Kingdom, Ms Marvel, The Bird King) and acclaimed illustrator M.K. Perker (The New Yorker, Mad Magazine, Fables).

"The fantasy is real, and the reality is fantastic. AIR is a compelling and completely original read that thrills, surprises and delights." -Gail Simone

Why this caught my eye:

It's just nice to see Dark Horse picking up Vertigo's slack on reprints of good stuff.

(W) Remi Guerin (A/CA) Krystel

Darryl is one of the most popular journalists in Openworld thanks to his power to travel between realities. His adventures are legendary, but he takes his role as a reporter seriously. When he investigates the disappearance of a Giant, he uncovers a conspiracy by a mysterious individual who would exploit magic for unknown purposes.

Why this caught my eye:

I like that teeny tiny solicit that barely gives you anything to go on. Here, check out the actual page and previews on the Magnetic website.

(W) Arnold Arre (A) Arnold Arre

Immerse yourself in a high-stakes fantasy adventure set in the Philippines!

This Philippine National Book Award winner fuses traditional myth and magic with contemporary action. Borrowing elements from The Lord of the Rings and The Phantom Tollbooth, author and creator Arnold Arre reinvents age-old Filipino fables, constructing a rich world of fantasy and adventure for a new generation.

The Mythology Class follows Nicole Lacson, an anthropology student at the University of the Philippines. When she is summoned to a secret meeting by the mysterious Madame Enkanta, Nicole finds herself face-to-face with living creatures from mythology and folklore that she never imagined existed in real life! Tikblangs, kapres and a range of engkantos--fantasy figures from her grandfather's bedtime stories--challenge her previously-held notions of reality.

Nicole embarks on a quest through the streets of metropolitan Manila with a ragtag crew of college students. With guest appearances from legendary Filipino heroes like Sulayman, Kubin and Lamang, Nicole's class must face down and repel an ancient evil.

The Mythology Class features world-building of the highest order, balancing the scope and magnitude of an adventure epic with the humor, warmth and insight of a classic coming-of-age tale.

Why this caught my eye:

There really isn't that much in the industry that tackles this subject matter, so I'm all for more of it and this just sounds like a great package.

(W) Rafal Jaki (A/CA) Hataya

In a new world inspired by Edo-period Japan, Geralt is faced with difficult moral choices while battling a variety of yokai and oni, creatures inspired by Japanese myths. Each encounter drops a clue in his desperate search for a mysterious apparition known as the Lady of Snow, yuki onna, for she is the key to who Geralt seeks, but finding her won't be easy . . .

Presenting a new story in The Witcher universe based on the rich traditions of Japanese folklore. Here, the role of a witcher is just as essential-as dangerous spirits and demons are constantly on the prowl.

Why this caught my eye:

I'm not a diehard Witcher fan, but the Kickstarter for this caught my eye a while back and I really love Hataya's art.

That's it for this batch, we'll hit up some non-fiction on the next round!
