Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Fantasy

This batch features mystical creatures that bond with people, the tale of a twelve-year-old child Empress, the new Garth Ennis take on Hawk the Slayer, the next project from the creators of 'Curse Words', and the complete collection of Natasha Alterici's amazing Heathen series.

(W) Curtis Clow (A/CA) Jo Mi-Gyeong

Keepers are mystical creatures that bond with people who experience great hardships in their lives. Some see them as friends, family even, but others see them as nothing more than dangerous beasts that the world is better without.

Mac, Ping, Ava, and their keepers are in search of Mac's father who vanished one day and never returned.

A heartfelt fantasy adventure from the writer of The Wild Cosmos, with luscious art by powerhouse Jo Mi-Gyeong, artist of Eve and The Dark Crystal.

Why this caught my eye:

I'm just super happy to see this getting broader circulation through Dark Horse, plus I really enjoy Jo Mi-Gyeong's art.

(W) Morgan Rosenblum, Jonny Handler (A) Eduard Petrovich, Eduardo Mello, Alessio Moroni, Filipe Andrade (CA) Philip Kruse

When the twelve-year-old child Empress inherited the throne of Numa Sera, the "One True Kingdom" became immediately vulnerable. While she grows to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders, across her kingdom a stable boy, a Baron's daughter, and a warrior meet with their own opportunities . . . to escape, rebel, and rule.

o From the creators of the best-selling indie graphic novel series, Treadwater, comes a medieval fantasy, original graphic novel!

Why this caught my eye:

The original Kickstarter for this had caught my eye a while back, plus again, good for Dark Horse for picking up these types of projects for wider distribution.

(W) Garth Ennis (A) Henry Flint (CA) Greg Staples

A few years have passed since Hawk and his trusty band of warriors defeated the evil wizard Voltan, but Hawk is still uneasy, fearing that the Dark wizards have only temporarily disappeared and are due to return. Once again, Hawk must assemble a team of warriors to confront the returning evil. The Mind Sword may be the key to saving the world, but is it also responsible for the resurgence of these ungodly forces? FEB221649

Why this caught my eye:

I'm generally down for Ennis projects, but also I really love Flint's work from Zombo so it's just a fun creative team.

(W) Charles Soule (A/CA) Ryan Browne

If you had one wish...what would you wish for? Now, what if everyone else had one wish too? That's EIGHT BILLION GENIES, the new eight-issue series from CHARLES SOULE & RYAN BROWNE (CURSE WORDS). At exactly the same moment, everyone on earth gets a genie and one wish. All hell breaks loose, in a very entertaining way...and that's just the beginning. Buckle in for the wildest ride of the year!

Why this caught my eye:

Knowing the creative teams past work, this should at least be bizarrely entertaining. Also, maybe horrific.

(W) Natasha Alterici (A) Ashley Woods (A/CA) Natasha Alterici

Aydis is a viking, a warrior, an outcast, and a self-proclaimed heathen. Aydis is friend to the talking horse Saga, rescuer of the immortal Valkyrie Brynhild, and battler of demons and fantastic monsters. Aydis is a woman. Born into a time of warfare, suffering, and subjugation of women, she is on a mission to end the oppressive reign of the god-king Odin.

Why this caught my eye:

I absolutely love Heathen so I'm super happy for a nice big edition. Do yourself a favor and and check out this LGBTQ Viking fantasy saga out, and check out more of Alterici's artwork and other work while you're at it.

That's it for this batch, we'll hit up some non-fiction on the next round!
