Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Fantasy

This batch features the return of the Cursed Pirate Girl, a collection chronicling traditional folk tales from Africa, Europe, and Asia, a new Witcher adaptation, a modern fantasy taking place in the aftermath of a failed utopia, and a fast-paced genre mashup adventure from JH Williams III.

(W) Jeremy Bastian (A/CA) Jeremy Bastian

* In the long awaited continuation of Cursed Pirate Girl, her loyal companion Pepper Dice reveals that there's still time to bring back her father, the Pirate Captain Douglas!

* If she can escape the Sea King's Palace with The Bright Star, will she be bold enough to enter The Devil's Cave in the hope to bring her father back? Or will the Devil Jonah and his minions stop her?

Why this caught my eye:

I'm late in highlighting this as #1 should already be out, but it's always a slight miracle when new CPG material pops up so I still wanted to spotlight it. If you've never checked out Bastian's artwork I highly recommend checking out the previous books, it's just beautiful work.

Why this caught my eye:

This is a pretty great package for $45, plus I'll pretty much push anything with Carla Speed McNeil as she's one of my favorite creators.

(W) Andrzej Sapkowski, Jacek Rembis (A) Jonas Scharf (CA) Kai Carpenter

Geralt comes across a derelict mansion where he is met with the current owner-not quite human, but a beast with the faculties of a man. The beast invites him inside where he shares stories of his family, his life . . . and his curse. If the weight of his misdeeds could condemn him to the body of a beast-a retribution spoken of only in fairy tales, could there be another grain of truth in these tales of fantasy-one that could help him elude his fate and lead him to salvation?

o Official graphic novel adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's short story "A Grain of Truth."

o Witcher Season 2 coming to Netflix this December!

Why this caught my eye:

Just a heads up for the thirsty Geralt fans who need another dose after season 2.

(W) George Mann (A) Aleta Vidal

In the aftermath of a failed utopia, an exiled woman fights to be reunited with her children by harnessing the mythic power that changed the planet forever.

From the Sunday Times bestselling creator of Newbury & Hobbes and author of numerous comics and novels for Star Wars, Doctor Who, and Warhammer 40,000, comes an epic modern fantasy, rich in mythology and adventure, with an emotional personal story at its heart.

Why this caught my eye:

I'm always interested in seeing a blend of modern fantasy and post-apocalyptic dystopia. You can check out some preview pages on Vidal's Behance page.

(W) J. H. Williams, Haden Blackman (A) Dave Stewart, Todd Klein (A/CA) J. H. Williams

The story of Earth's last war starts with Hope's sticky fingers...

The multiple award-winning Batwoman team of J. H. WILLIAMS III (Promethea, The Sandman: Overture, Batman) and W. HADEN BLACKMAN (Star Wars, Elektra) reunites! They're joined once again by colorist supreme DAVE STEWART and master letterer TODD KLEIN.

In a bizarre future world that has forgotten its history, reckless thief Hope Redhood holds the key to excavating its dark, strange past?if only she and her crew can escape a tyrannical wizard and his unstoppable daughter. But fate will send them all on a path leading to a war between worlds.

ECHOLANDS is a landscape-format, mythic-fiction epic where anything is possible? A fast-paced genre mashup adventure that combines everything from horror movie vampires, to classic mobsters and cyborg elves, to Roman demigods and retro rocket ships. It's going to be a helluva ride!

Why this caught my eye:

I have trouble saying no to Williams' art, plus I like the genre melting pot approach.

That's it for this batch, we'll hit up some non-fiction on the next round!
