Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Crime/Suspense

This batch features a new project from the creators of Giant Days, a new Peter Tomasi serial killer thriller, some Sherlock Holmes action from Titan, a new Matt Kindt release, and the newest Brubaker/Phillips noir installment.

(W) John Allison (A) Max Sarin (CA) John Allison

An Agatha Christie-style murder mystery set in the world of English competitive baking from Giant Days' John Allison and Max Sarin. When she enters her country's most beloved baking competition, Shauna Wickle's goal is to delight the judges, charm the nation, and make a few friends along the way. But when a fellow contestant is poisoned, it falls to her to apprehend the culprit while avoiding premature elimination from the UK Bakery Tent... and being the poisoner's next victim! FEB230355

Why this caught my eye:

You should read Giant Days, but even if you don't a murder mystery set against the background of competitive baking sounds great.

(W) Peter J. Tomasi (A) Maxim Simic (CA) Christian Alamy, Brad Anderson

Two obsessed NYPD detectives hunt for a vicious butcher called the Angel Killer, a sociopath who preys on the innocent family members of known murderers in order to "purify" the rest of society.

From comics super team PETER J. TOMASI (Batman and Robin, Superman, Black Adam: The Dark Age, Super-Sons, Detective Comics) and MAXIM IMI? (Escape from New York, Conan) comes a story that confronts the battle of nature versus nurture, considers how present and future generations are tainted by past generations, and asks the age-old question: Who must pay for the sins of the fathers-and perhaps even the sins of the mothers?

Why this caught my eye:

Late on the draw on this one as you should be able to pick up the first issue now, but truly love me some Tomasi thrillers so it's worth spotlighting.

(W) Frederic Duval (A) Stevan Subic (CA) Lenka Simeckova

In a London opium den, a monster is killed by the police with seven bullets to the body. At the Diogenes club, an investigator and his partner thwart the Machiavellian plans of a card-playing automaton, and that evening the monster's alter ego will come out of the hospital unscathed... and Holmes and Watson are on the case!

Why this caught my eye:

Subic has been picking up more work stateside, so this reprint of some of his earlier work caught my attention. Check out more of his art here.

(W) Matt Kindt (A/CA) Denis Pendanx

Mr. Mammoth is the world's greatest detective and the kind of person you don't forget. Being a seven-foot-tall pacifist who's covered head to toe with an impressive collection of horrific scars makes quite the impression. But he might be losing his edge. He can't seem to solve his latest case and he's distracted with a strange obsession with a soap opera actress who doesn't even know he exists. His new case holds clues that might finally unlock the secret of his traumatic childhood. The question is: is he solving a crime-or planning one?

Mr. Mammoth is the first-ever original graphic novel from Matt Kindt's all-new imprint, Flux House, which features crime, science fiction, and humor stories, all told in startling and untraditional ways. For Mr. Mammoth, Kindt is joined by internationally acclaimed artist Jean Denis Pendanx, who's making his U.S. debut!

o Collects the orginal noir graphic novel Mister Mammoth for the first time.

Why this caught my eye:

I'm unfamiliar with Pendanx's work but I'm liking what I'm seeing.

(W) Ed Brubaker (A) Jacob Phillips (A/CA) Sean Phillips

A gripping new original graphic novel from ED BRUBAKER & SEAN PHILLIPS, the bestselling creators of PULP, RECKLESS, CRIMINAL, and KILL OR BE KILLED.

Who are you, really? Are you the things you do, or are you the person inside your mind?

In Europe on a business trip, Jonathan Webb can't sleep. Instead, he finds himself wandering the night in a strange foreign city with his new friend, the mysterious and violent Rainer, as his guide. Rainer shows Jonathan the hidden world of the night, a world without rules or limits. But when the fun turns dangerous, Jonathan may find himself trapped in the dark-the question is, what will he do to get home?

NIGHT FEVER is a pulse-pounding Jekyll-and-Hyde noir thriller about a man facing the darkness inside himself. This riveting tour of the night is a must-have for all BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS fans!

Why this caught my eye:

Obligatory Brubaker/Phillips new project heads up. Also, old retailer advice: don't expect the comic store workers to automatically order this stuff for you just because you like all [insert creators name here]. Take the time to pre-order it, trust me it's a lifesaver for your comic store friends.

That's it for this batch, we'll hit up some Marvel on the next round!
