Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Crime/Suspense

This batch features inmate firefighters working towards a new score, the return of Matt Kindt's MGMT, a highschool mystery, a new Terry Moore project, and a visually stunning Sherlock Holmes graphic novel.

(W) Scott Snyder (A) Hayden Sherman

Six weeks into the slow burn of the historic Arroyo Fire, a crew of women from an inmate firefighting program are risking everything on the frontlines when their newest recruit - a white-collar convict with a deep network of shady dealers - discovers they're mere miles from her crooked former associate's mansion. When she proposes a plan to abandon their duties and hunt for riches under cover of smoke and ash, the team must decide if they're ready to jeopardize their one sure path back to normalcy for a shot at a score that would change their lives... But is this a flicker of fortune or a deadly trap? Scott Snyder and breakout artist Hayden Sherman craft an unforgettable heist for a new age in Dark Spaces: Wildfire.

Why this caught my eye:

I like the setup, and I'm interested in seeing more Snyder work that isn't horror or Batman. Plus I'm liking Sherman's artwork and I like seeing his star rise.

(W) Matt Kindt (A/CA) Farel Dalrymple

MIND MGMT is: weird, mind-blowing, paranoid storytelling. It is the first ever comic book from Flux House, Matt Kindt's all-new imprint which features crime, science fiction, and humor stories, all told in startling and untraditional ways. Upcoming publications will take many forms, and the polybagged variant versions of MIND MGMT will contain a card that is playable as a playing card or as part of a new Flux House game. Previously in MIND MGMT: a covert government agency of psychic superspies fell into oblivion after one of their top agents went rogue. What looked like the end was only the beginning as a former leader of MIND MGMT explores the darkest parts of the world and recruits a team of forgotten agents to rebuild the organization, bend reality, and go to war with a competing agency.

Why this caught my eye:

I should probably finish the previous MGMT stuff......

(W) Maurizio Furini, Frederico Chemello (A/CA) Agnesse Innocente

Dieter committed suicide by jumping off the school roof. Niklas knew him and cannot understand the reasons for his choice, so he decided to use his powers to investigate on it. Little did he known what he was about to discover.

Why this caught my eye:

Innocente's artwork caught my eye and I'm interested in seeing more of her narrative work.

(W) Terry Moore (A/CA) Terry Moore

When Annie Graham's lifeless body washes up Venice beach, the nation mourns the loss of a popular actress. Police suspect her death was no accident but Graham's husband-billionaire Zachary Lot-has the best lawyers money can buy and the investigation stalls. That's when Tambi Baker decides to take matters into her own hands and enlist three of her finest Parker Girl operatives to bring the Lot Empire down, one shocking scandal at a time.

Why this caught my eye:

Moore's work has never really clicked for me but I know plenty who follow him whenever they can, so just a little signal flare here.

(W) Benoit Dahan (A/CA) Cyril Lieron

An award-winning original graphic novel starring the world’s greatest detective: Sherlock Holmes! See into Sherlock’s mind like never before as Cyril Lieron depicts an intricate visual representation of his mind palace!

Sherlock Holmes fans can sink their teeth into this brand new original tale, which uniquely portrays the inner workings of the greatest detective’s mind as he works to solve the case!

A visually stunning treat, every thought and clue that flows through Sherlock’s mind is thoroughly explored and displayed in the art for readers to latch onto. Put on your deerstalker and pull out your magnifying glass, there’s a mystery to be solved!

Set in the Victorian era, the discovery of a mysterious powder on some clothing and a very special show ticket leads Sherlock Holmes to believe a patient isn't the only victim of a grand conspiracy.

Indeed, it seems the strange disappearance of Londoners can be explained by the performances of a Chinese magician. When other tickets are found, the detective's suspicions are confirmed…

Why this caught my eye:

Definitely here for the Lieron artwork from what few sample snippets I could find online.

That's it for this batch, we'll check out some Marvel titles on the next round!
