Upcoming Comics Spotlight: All-Ages/YA

This batch features the only human girl on the planet of Nerth, the epic adventures of Adora, a fun Shakespeare mash-up for all ages, the collection of the debut series of cartoonist Sas Milledge, and the first installment of a promising middle-grade graphic novel series with sweeping adventure and light romance!

(W) Nathan Tomsic, Georgiana Brown (A) Lorenzo Colangeli

Scoot Imprint: Juniper is the only human girl on the planet of Nerth. Accompanied by her loyal robot pal, she embarks on an adventure to discover what happened to her vanished friend. She accidentally becomes embroiled in a larger mystery. A malevolent spirit has dark plans for the universe and Juniper's actions have made her a obstacle, an irritation, this evil being plans to eliminate. Enjoy the first issue of this NON-STOP! title followed by the entire story collected soon after in one volume.

Why this caught my eye:

Colangeli's artwork looks pretty great, plus I like the look of that lizard cowboy on the cover.

(W) Marc Bernardin (A/CA) Ariela Kristantina

Adora and the Distance is a YA fantasy graphic novel following the epic adventures of Adora, a brave young woman of color who lives in a fantastical world with underground pirates, ghosts, and a mysterious force called "the Distance" which threatens to destroy it all and only Adora can stop it. From Marc Bernardin-the award-winning television writer/producer on Star Trek: Picard, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina, Masters of the Universe: Revelations, Castle Rock, and Mata Hari's Ariela Kristantina.

o Collects Adora and the Distance original digital series in print for the first time. NOV210308

Why this caught my eye:

I've been digging Kristantina's art on twitter as of late.

(W) Jim Burnstein, Garrett Schiff (A/CA) Elisa Ferrari

The eponymous Pig Prince himself returns home from college to find that his uncle Claude betrayed and murdered his father to seize the throne! But this familiar fable veers into the zany and adventurous when Ham-let calls upon his best friend Horatio and a troupe of rowdy, self-centered actors to aid him in halting his uncle's evil plans. Ham-let and the troupe must cast aside their egos and work together as a team to have any chance of saving the village from falling to King Claude's corrupt rule!

o A fun Shakespeare mash-up for all ages!

Why this caught my eye:

I'm mostly interested in how they'll filter out the more depressing aspects of Hamlet, plus Ferrari's art looks pretty sharp.

(W) Sas Milledge (A/CA) Sas Milledge

Which does a young witch choose, her own dreams, or the destiny laid out by her dead grandmother?

Cartoonist Sas Milledge (The Lost Carnival: A Dick Grayson Graphic Novel) makes her astonishing debut in her first original title that answers the question of how we all reconcile our responsibilities with our dreams for our own future.

Orla O'Reilly, the youngest in a long line of hedge witches, is compelled to return home after the death of her grandmother, Mamo. In the wake of her Mamo's passing, seas are impossible to fish, crops have soured, and even Jo Manalo's attic is taken over by a poltergeist! And to make matters worse, it appears that the cause is Mamo, or her mislaid bones, that is.

Can Orla shoulder the responsibility of quieting her Mamo's spirit, and saving her hometown? And will she have to step up as the new witch of Haresden like Mamo always wanted?

Collects Mamo #1-5.

Why this caught my eye:

I've been looking forward to this collection since the first issue was previewed, I'm just a big fan of Milledge's art.

(W) Amy Kim Kibuishi (A/CA) Amy Kim Kibuishi

Enter the rich and fantastical world of Rema in the first installment of this middle-grade graphic novel series with sweeping adventure and light romance!

Tabby Simon is determined to learn what happened to her father, who was found dead after researching a tree that leaks a mysterious mist in her neighborhood. She is unexpectedly led to Rema, a distant world of magic and beauty that is periodically invaded by a nearby planet desperate for resources. While Tabby searches for the truth surrounding her father's death, she meets a handsome blue-haired boy named Philip. He has his own dangerous secrets, but he has promised to help Tabby get home. As Tabby learns more about this strange world, she discovers that she is destined for something far greater than she ever could have imagined.

Why this caught my eye:

Something for the fans of Amulet, 5 Worlds, and Zita to keep an eye out for.

That's it for this round, we'll check out some Action/Adventure on the next round!
