Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Action/Adventure

This batch features some Deadwood-style Western colliding with the fantasia of Neil Gaiman, the debut graphic novel series from popular artist Koteri Ink, The Purge meets Scream in a home invasion thriller, three sisters trying to solve the murder of their Nazi-hunting mother, and a striking new spy-fi series by Declan Shalvey.

(W) Sean Lewis (A/CA) Hayden Sherman

The hit team behind THE FEW and THUMBS returns with an all-new WILD AS HELL miniseries! Writer SEAN LEWIS (KING SPAWN), artist HAYDEN SHERMAN (Wasted Space), and rock-star letterer HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU introduce a world where Deadwood-style Westerns collide with the fantasia of NEIL GAIMAN in the story of Dirt, a man seeking vengeance for his murdered wife with nothing but a talking vulture to prod him on. ABOVE SNAKES is a fast and furious explosion of Western tropes and American vengeance that explores where our rage can take us.

Why this caught my eye:

I really like the sound of the set-up plus the art in the previews is looking pretty nice.

(W) Soroush Barazesh (A/CA) Soroush Barazesh

Bili is the son of a notorious gangster, but his lonesome demeanor makes him an easy target for local thugs. When a beating takes a ruthless turn, Bili is overcome with intense rage and trauma-transforming him into his chimera form-into that of an ape. With the aid of new comrades, he embarks on a life of purpose-a life of cold, unapologetic vengeance against each of those who have taken a piece of him.

The debut graphic novel series written and illustrated by artist Soroush Barazesh, also known by his online moniker Koteri Ink!

Why this caught my eye:

I've been following Barazesh's work online for a bit so I'm happy to see DH bringing his stuff to print.

(W) Hannah Rose May (A) Justin Mason, Triona Farrell (CA) Declan Shalvey

Writer HANNAH ROSE MAY makes her comic debut with rising-star artist JUSTIN MASON for an all-new series with DECLAN SHALVEY. The Purge meets Scream in a home invasion thriller that follows disenfranchised TV superhero actress Maisie Wade as she is terrorized by an unhinged group of intruders cosplaying her day job's archvillains. If Maisie is going to survive the night, she'll need to be the hero she has come to despise.

REGISTER PITCH: The Purge meets Misery in a twist on the classic slasher tale where a celebrity's biggest fans can become her biggest foes. MAY220009

Why this caught my eye:

I like that concept a lot plus I'm down with checking out a new writer debut.

(W) Erica Schultz (A) Carola Borelli, Gab Contreras (CA) Adriana Melo

Jasmine Hawthorn was a hard-edged Nazi hunter who trained her children well in the art of espionage. But in 1998, when her complicated past finally catches up with her, it's up to her three estranged daughters, Rose, Poppy, and Violet, to solve their mom's murder-if they can avoid killing each other in the process.

Why this caught my eye:

We're seeing more Kickstarter projects getting picked up by the likes of Image and DH so I'm pretty interested and happy in this development.

(W) Declan Shalvey (A/CA) Declan Shalvey

Jack Lynch was a once-promising CIA operative. On the eve of retirement, looking back at a failed career, he is tasked with one final mission...that goes horribly wrong. He wakes years later to a changed world and deeper changes within him. When a shadow group offers Lynch a second chance at a life of adventure, he's paired with the last person he could ever imagine. In order to adjust, this old dog will have to learn some new tricks...

OLD DOG is a striking new spy-fi series by DECLAN SHALVEY, the accomplished and innovative creator behind books such as Moon Knight, X-Men Unlimited, INJECTION, and TIME BEFORE TIME. The Winter Soldier meets Mission Impossible in this Bourne-esque action/espionage blowout.

Why this caught my eye:

80% of this batch turned into one big Image solicit fest, didn't it? Ah well.

I enjoy Shalvey's art, and while sorta does just sound a little too similar to RED I'm down with seeing what he's got up his sleeve.

That's it for this batch, we'll check out some crime/suspense next time!
