Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Action/Adventure

Cowboys, immortals, criminals, and luchadores make for an good batch of upcoming action spotlights.

You'll see that I'll try to include a little order code with most items (ex:JUL200019). Show some love to your retailer and use those codes when you can, it saves a lot of time on the data entry end of things.

(W) Geof Darrow (A/CA) Geof Darrow

The Shaolin Cowboy walks the action-packed path of three enemies: Those from the past, who still pursue him, those from the future who are waiting for him, and those from the present who find killing him isn't going to be as easy as he looks. The original Eisner winning series published by Burlyman Entertainment in all its bloody glory. It's fat, it's fast, it's furious!!!

Collects Shaolin Cowboy: The Burlyman series #1-#7.

Why this caught my eye:

This original run blew me away when it first came out and I still think it's the best of the Shaolin Cowboy material. Well worth checking out just for the gorgeously detailed and insane artwork.

(W) Al Feldstein (A) Johnny Craig, Graham Ingles, Henry C. Kiefer, Stan Asch, Ed Schwartz (CA) Marie Severin

Daring sheriffs take on the meanest outlaws and brave the roughest terrain in this collection of classic western stories, advertised as "true and terrific." This hardcover volume collects the complete run of Saddle Justice, recolored digitally using the original palette, featuring art by legendary comics talents Johnny Craig, Graham Ingels, Stan Asch, and more!

Why this caught my eye:

While I do like the B&W creator specific EC reprints from Fantagraphics, I really like these color reprints that Dark Horse pulls together as well.

(W) Greg Rucka, Andrew Wheeler (A) Jacopo Camagni (A/CA) Leandro Fernandez

The bestselling, critically acclaimed THE OLD GUARD, now a hit Netflix movie starring Charlize Theron, returns with all-new stories by writers GREG RUCKA, VITA AYALA, BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS, KELLY SUE DeCONNICK, MATT FRACTION, DAVID F. WALKER, and more, and artists LEANDRO FERNÁNDEZ, HORACIO ALTUNA, RICK BURCHETT, VALENTINE DE LANDRO, JUSTIN GREENWOOD, KANO, NICOLA SCOTT, and more!

Andromache the Scythian-a warrior over six thousand years old, who has fought more battles than she cares to remember-has kept one constant companion through her long lifetime of combat...her labrys. Andy's battle axe takes many forms, and many lives, in its centuries at her side, a story told by THE OLD GUARD creators GREG RUCKA & LEANDRO FERNÁNDEZ.

Meanwhile, Nicolo "Nicky" di Genova and Yusuf "Joe" al-Kaysani, lovers since they tried (and failed) to kill each other in the First Crusade, spend an evening at Berlin's famed Eldorado nightclub in the twilight era of 1932, sharing drinks with drag queens and fistfighting Nazis in an all-new story by writer ANDREW WHEELER (Another Castle: Grimoire) and JACOPO CAMAGNI (NOMEN OMEN)!

Why this caught my eye:

I just really like the anthology approach to the history of this series, plus I really like Camagni's artwork.

(W) Jerry Siegel, Reg Bunn (A) Ted Cowan

Equipped with a razor-sharp mind, superb athletic ability and a vast array of cutting edge gadgets, The Spider has his sights set on taking over the New York underworld and establishing a "Syndicate of Crime"! Join the menacing Spider on his earliest adventures, recruiting other fiends into his fledging empire and seeing off competition from other villainous foes, including the master of illusion, Mirror Man! Fully remastered and collected for the first time, this volume presents many of the super-crook's exciting 1960's adventures which sprang from the imagination of Superman co-creator, Jerry Siegel.

Why this caught my eye:

I love that 2000AD has been getting all these reprints out, and this villain-centric material from Siegel is just a lot of fun.

(W) J. Gonzo (A/CA) J. Gonzo

LA MANO DEL DESTINO tells the tale of a once-champion Luchador-who, after being betrayed by his friends and unmasked in the ring, agrees to a Faustian bargain with a mysterious promoter. He gains a new power and the identity of La Mano del Destino in order to exact revenge upon his betrayers. Set in a swanky, 1960s Mexico where Lucha Libre is intrinsically woven into all aspects of society, this tale winds its way through the machinations and motivations of all types who inhabit this unique setting. Can La Mano del Destino get his revenge while remaining the champion he knows himself to be? Mesoamerican myth, Silver-Age storytelling, and high-flying Lucha Libre action converge to tell this epic story of vengeance and destiny!

Collects LA MANO DEL DESTINO #1-6.

Why this caught my eye:

Maybe this might fit better under fantasy, but c'mon it's full of lucha action. This is a reprint of an older series I believe, but there simply aren't enough lucha themed comics out there (oh how I miss you Sonambulo) so we need to spotlight fun projects like this whenever we can.

That's it for this batch, we'll hit crime/suspense on the next installment!
