Upcoming Comics Spotlight

The focus on this instalment will be on upcoming art books!

You'll see that I'll try to include a little order code with most items (ex:JUL200019). Show some love to your retailer and use those codes when you can, it saves a lot of time on the data entry end of things.

(A) Ashley Wood

This comprehensive collection of the best of Ashley Wood's work covers nearly 400 "treasured" art works in a range of media, from his oil paintings, sketches and drawings, to his package and figurine designs. These works have either been unpublished or have only been available in previous exhibition catalogues. Inspired by Osamu Tezuka and Nobuyoshi Araki, Wood is in constant motion developing new epic stories and expanding universes populated with his designs and creations for toy lines, comics, video games, film, and music.

Why this caught my eye:

$35 us a pretty great price for a nice Ashley Wood artbook, especially for a lot of material that was generally unavailable.

Why this caught my eye:

They had my curiosity at 'Fashion illustration is a new genre in the Japanese illustration scene'. Did a quick search for the one artist they list in the solicit, DaisukeRichard, and I really like their style.

(W) Joe Lansdale (A/CA) Timothy Truman

A career-spanning collection of art from Grimjack co-creator Timothy Truman. This full-color hardcover focuses on Truman's wide range of work, including pieces from western, fantasy, and science fiction genres. Primarily pulling from his catalog of roleplaying game covers and illustrations, comic book covers and interior art, and book illustrations, Truman has worked for nearly every modern comic book publisher, including Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse. Truman's frequent collaborator, Joe R. Lansdale, provides an introduction.

Why this caught my eye:

I missed this solicit the first few times I went over the catalog and just now stumbled on it. Truman's been so prolific over the years that it would seem difficult to truly capture enough of his material, but this sounds like a nice HC. The odd thing is I can't even find it on the publisher's website, so no idea on the page count. For $40 I would hope it's chunky, and most other Clover publications have been decent packages.

(W) Adam Cesare (A) Brian Froud

The Dark Crystal Bestiary is the definitive in-depth exploration of the flora and fauna found in the world of Thra. Created by Jim Henson for his 1982 puppet masterpiece, Thra is a remarkable realm in which all living things are connected and the lines between animal, vegetable, and mineral are blurred - rocks can sing and trees can walk! For the first time, this deluxe volume delves into the many creatures, plants, and beings created for the Dark Crystal universe, from the original film through to the expanded universe of novels and comics, and Netflix's TV series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Why this caught my eye:

I'm a fan of cool fantasy bestiaries and Dark Crystal, so this is an easy one.

That does it for this chunk of books!
