New & Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Manga

This batch features a new project from the creator of Chainsaw Man, the decades in waiting reprinting of Tsutomu Nihei's Wolverine project, a lady and her snake husband, a popular webtoons comic getting its first English translation, and Fantagraphics re-releasing a comic series by one of the most transgressive and experimental of Japan's manga auteurs.

(W) Tatsuki Fujimoto (A/CA) Tatsuki Fujimoto

From the mad genius behind Chainsaw Man and Look Back comes a new story about coping with loss. Yuta's moviemaking career started with the request from his mother to record her final moments. But after her death, Yuta meets a mysterious girl named Eri who takes his life in new directions. The two begin creating a movie together, but Eri harbors an explosive secret.

For older teen audiences.

Why this caught my eye:

Tatsuki Fujimoto kinda lands 50/50 for mem but the setup for this sounds interesting.

(W) Tsutomu Nihei, Tsutomu Nihei (CA) Tsutomu Nihei

In 2003, fresh off the success of his hit series Blame!, star manga creator Tsutomu Nihei connected with Marvel Comics, writing and drawing the limited series Wolverine: Snikt! Bringing his signature style to bear on the iconic X-Man, Nihei took Wolverine to a darker, more terrifying dimension, presented here in a deluxe edition. For teen audiences.

Why this caught my eye:

It's kind of astonishing that Marvel hasn't reprinted this since the 2004 Wolverine Legends release, so glad to see Viz just getting the license to knock this out.

(W) Fushiashikumo (A/CA) Fushiashikumo

For 500 years, a giant snake god has lived in the ancient mountain. Miyo, an unlucky young woman from the nearby village, has been offered as a tribute: she is to be the snake's bride. Miyo always feared that the enormous talking snake would devour her whole, but once she's taken in by the god, he treats her like a wife rather than a meal. His flicking tongue vibrates through gentle words, his powerful slithering body wraps around hers in an embrace. This god is kinder than his monstrous form implies, and Miyo thinks she could learn to appreciate the non-human form his love takes. What does it truly mean to be the bride of a beast?

Why this caught my eye:

I'm just generally a fan of 'Horrible monster is actually a decent bloke' type stories.

(W) Dongwoo Han (A/CA) Jinho Ko

Jungwoo Min has a special ability, one that lets him see when a path leads to a misfortune, or disaster. He uses his "Eyes of Misfortune" to spot these unfortunate events and stop them. Disguising himself as a terrorist, he begins using his power to save people from certain danger. This leads him to become feared by the people he is looking to save. Soon he discovers that the more he saves others, the unhappier he becomes. Thus unfolds the story of a hero and his struggle between happiness and despair. And the unfortunate reality of saving the world, even while becoming a supposed terrorist...or TERROR MAN!

Why this caught my eye:

You can sample the art of the untranslated version over at Webtoons.

(W) Kago (A/CA) Kago

A two-volume custom slipcase set featuring the devilishly funny, absurdist adult manga stories by Shintaro Kago, one of the most transgressive and experimental of Japan's manga auteurs. Initially printed in a super limited edition run, Fantagraphics is bringing this title back into print for trade audiences. Presented in a beautifully designed deluxe slipcase, it contains the complete two-volume paperback set of this engrossing and bestselling manga series.

Why this caught my eye:

I'm a sucker for a nice slipcase set with weird art and stories.

That's it for this batch, we'll check out some comedy on the next round!
