New & Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Humor

This batch features the return of an early 2000's indy satire, Satan's favorite pet, the return of Chip Zdarsky's fantasy comedy Kaptara, an absurd comedy of contemporary manners, and a fancy slipcase box set for Ignatz Award winning webcomic Octopus Pie.

WEAPON BROWN AFTERSHOCK LITTLE RED S&N ED

(W) Jason Yungbluth (A/CA) Jason Yungbluth

The shocking sequel to Weapon Brown, Jason Yungbluth's outrageous post-apocalyptic lampoon of the funny pages! When a desert prophet drops in on the town of Dogpatch, he won't leave until he learns the truth behind the legend of Weapon Brown... and settles some unfiniched business. This "Little Red" edition of Aftershock is black and white with striking spot reds, and is the only edition that will be colored in this manner! And each copy of this 1,000-unit print run comes signed and numbered by the author. A thrilling read and a guaranteed collector's item! JUL231535

Why this caught my eye:

I'm about as surprised to see a new installment of this early aughts indy comic as I am that there's a really well fleshed out wikipage for it as well.

HOWIE THE HELLHOUND #1

(W) Jared Prestwidge (CA) Simon Robins (A/CA) Carlos Trigo

Satan's favorite pet, a Hellhound named Howie, escapes the pits of Hell and settles down with a human owner, Louise, in New York City. But when Hell's forces rise to take back what's theirs, the pair must find a way to come out the other side and earn the fresh start at life that they both crave. Howie the Hellhound is a supernatural dramedy filled to the brim with heart, danger, and laughs, along with a sprinkling of fire and brimstone!

Why this caught my eye:

I mean it's a dog comic, so I'm pretty much sold.

KAPTARA UNIVERSAL TRUTHS #1 (OF 6)

(W) Chip Zdarsky (A/CA) Kagan McLeod

Back because YOU demanded it! Yes, you! Don't you remember? We were having drinks and you said, "Hey. Whatever happened to... was it KAPTANNA?"

CHIP ZDARSKY (PUBLIC DOMAIN, Batman) and KAGAN MCLEOD (Infinite Kung Fu, Cobra Kai) are BACK with a BRAND-NEW STORY ARC of their "beloved" "science" fiction series! Astronaut KEITH KANGA, trapped on the planet of Kaptara, is trying to find his way home, but first he needs to solve a mystery: who is stealing all the adorable CAT-TANKS? Who would DARE???

This wild and colorful series full of heart and chuckles could be yours for the low, low price of $3.99!

A new chapter in ZDARSKY'S charming, off-the-wall space comedy.

Why this caught my eye:

It only took eight years, but hey better late than never. If you never checked the original run and are in the mood for some He-Man sci-fi satire I highly recommend it.

THE GREAT BEYOND HC

(W) Lea Murawiec (A/CA) Lea Murawiec

Manel Naher wants out. In a world where your name is currency, it's tough to make ends meet. It's even tougher when you share a name with a rising pop star. This stylish, absurd comedy of contemporary manners skewers the human condition in persistent self-promo.

Why this caught my eye:

A kind of vague solicit but I really like Murawiec's art.

OCTOPUS PIE TP BOXSET

(W) Meredith Gran (A/CA) Meredith Gran

LIMITED TO 1000 SETS The award-winning webcomic series following 20-something best friends Eve and Hanna as they navigate the ups and downs of city life's soul-sucking jobs, heart-stopping romances, and all the social trappings of Brooklyn's indie sleaze era is now collected in a handsome five-volume box set. The unique box design gives uniformity to differently sized volumes.

Since its ten-year run, OCTOPUS PIE has been celebrated for the depth of its characters and its broad emotional resonance, cited as one of the best comics of the 2010s (The AV Club) and a decade-long masterpiece (Slate). The series is the recipient of two Ignatz Awards and two NCS Reuben Award nominations, and has been inducted into the Library of Congress' Webcomic Collection as a title of significance.

Collects OCTOPUS PIE, VOL. 1-5 JUL230446

Why this caught my eye:

I can't lie, the fact that they designed the slipcase to account for the varying print sizes appeals to my book collector/ex-retail soul far too much.

That's it for this batch, we'll check out some art books on the next round!
