New & Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Fantasy

This batch features some Celtic folklore, a necromancer's adventures, and ancient guardian, personified seasons, and a retelling of the Chinese saga Journey to the West.

(W) Andy Diggle (A) Nick Brokenshire, Triona Farrell

Celtic folklore and modern moxie collide as an ancient pact between worlds is broken. The sinister forces of Faerie have slipped their shackles, and the Black Dog walks abroad this night. On the rural Isle of Man, aspiring singer-songwriter Kay Farragher dreams of escaping her humdrum life. But she's about to get more than she bargained for-and some bargains are not to be trusted.

Cold Iron is supernatural thriller from Andy Diggle and Nick Brokenshire.

Collects Cold Iron #1-4.

Why this caught my eye:

I think I was lamenting the lack of Celtic folklore not too long ago, so hey lookit that turnaround. Also, I'm just glad that Dark Horse is getting a bunch of these Comixology first online comics into print, otherwise I would never know what's actually out there.

(W) Michael Christopher Heron, Andrea Fort (A) MJ Erickson (CA) Nick Robles

Bethany is a necromancer and a hero. Along with her companions, Elissar and Jonas, she has finally found the rumored Covenant. Her perilous journey has brought her to the last bastion of the necromancers, but resurging prejudices have them in shambles. Can Bethany unite them in the face of escalating tensions? Or will the coming war shatter all of her dreams for a peaceful future?

Why this caught my eye:

This is a general recommendation to catch up on all the Songs of the Dead material. I just found it to be an engaging and fun fantasy series.

(W) Eastin DeVerna (A/CA) Kay Baird

"High up in the Windy Mountains, there is a tomb. And there are rumors about this tomb." Aylward is the ancient guardian of The Tomb of Livia. When the Northern, Middle, and Southern kingdoms of the Great Sphere plunge into a three-pronged war once again, events are set in motion that will trigger the beginning of the End Times, and Aylward will soon find that the fate of the realm is a heavy weight to bear, indeed.

Collects A. Guardian Vol. 1 #1-3 plus a bonus story exclusive to this collection! JAN231873

Why this caught my eye:

The Kickstarter caught my eye a while back, and I really like Baird's art.

(W) Dan Watters (A) Sebastian Cabrol (CA) Qistina Khalidah

In a drab, colorless world, the seasons bring change... and also destruction.

Andrew, a retired conflict photographer, lives a life steeped in regret after an unthinkable tragedy, but everything shifts when the seasons arrive-each one a personified, god-like creature.

As he risks everything to track down Spring, Summer, AutumnFall, and Winter, will capturing the perfect picture of each be enough to find redemption... and ultimately bring color back to his world?

Dan Watters of Sword of Azrael and Home Sick Pilots writing acclaim is joined by artist Sebastian Cabrol (Anthony Bourdain's Hungry Ghosts, Maestro: World War M) for a tale that is both down to earth and supernaturally apocalyptic in its pertinence.

Why this caught my eye:

Really like that premise, and Cabrol's art in the previews is looking good.

(W) Chaiko (A/CA) Chaiko

A vibrant retelling of the legendary Chinese saga Journey to the West by artist/animator Chaiko, who brings his unique visual style and humor to this ageless fantasy adventure. A monkey is born from a stone struck by lightning and acquires supernatural abilities which he uses for mischief and glory. But soon he finds himself at the ire of the Heavens and imprisoned by the Buddha himself. To redeem himself, he is tasked with a quest to protect a monk on a great journey filled with danger and adventure.

Why this caught my eye:

I really wanted to move on the Kickstarter, but I gotta take it easy on that magnetic Press stuff.

That's it for this batch, we'll hit up some non-fiction on the next round!
